First Startup Day
Journey begins!
The first startup days for professional teacher training took place at Oulu University of Applied Science on 27th and 28th of August 2019. Our lecturers, Juha Pousi and Kimmo Kuortti and 16 students from all over the world met for the first time in Oulu. The contents of the startup days were mostly practical. I am happy to meet many interesting study mates who have various background. I am excited about my new learning journey!
What is Competence-based Education?
In this blog, I write about my learning experience of teaching in Competence-based education. Competence-based education can be described as an educational approach which focus on behavioural competence (the integration of knowledge, skills, attitude and interactivity) as intended learning outcomes (Nissilä, Karjalainen, Koukkari, & Kepanen, 2015). Behavioural competence is visible in educational objectives, outcomes statements, competency frameworks, task analyses, employability skills lists, performance and grading checklists (Curry & Docherty, 2017).
So it is education which highlights not only abstract knowledge but also concrete skills. It is easy to understand when we think about doctors’ case. As a doctor, s/he needs to have not only theoretical knowledge of how the human body is structured, but also the concrete skills to perform surgeries. The scale of competences varies a lot depending on the fields, but anyway, in this blog I write my reflection on the presumption of teaching in competence-based education.
